Overview
The video covers what is new in the Word add-in used to build Word layouts for Business Central reports. A pre-populated company information dataset (logo, name, address and other data from the company information card) is now available in every Word layout, so these fields no longer need to be encoded by hand. The table builder, in preview in wave one, now supports editing tables in the wizard.
It also shows a set of reusable design building blocks (address, field group, amounts, signature line, notes, and a hide-if logical control), sample documents for previewing theme changes, and the header/footer layouts that ship by default. It ends with a section on managing themes and layouts in Business Central, and on data sets and documentation.
Key points
- The data picker in the Word add-in got UX improvements and a new third option, Company information, alongside Report information.
- The company information dataset is available in every Word layout. It holds whatever is on the Company Information card in Business Central, such as logo, name and address.
- The table builder, in preview in wave one, now lets you go back and edit a table in the wizard, for example to add columns, instead of recreating it.
- Design blocks shown: address (sender, receiver and shipping in three columns, receiver only, or other choices), field group (label and data pairs in single or double stacked columns), amounts (visualizing calculations), signature lines (two types; signatures are used in the quality management module) and notes (selectable bullet count).
- These design blocks are not necessarily data-bound for now, just pure text, and will be used for all new body layouts in Business Central.
- The hide-if logical control hides or shows content based on a boolean value. Boolean expressions based on dataset values are planned for later.
- Theme sample documents (invoice, pick list, outstanding orders) help you preview how styles, fonts and colors change a document. They are not actual layouts.
