Overview

The video addresses the difficulty of getting an overview of DevOps across many repositories as an organization grows. The latest AL-Go for GitHub now includes a starter dashboard that makes it easier to get started with monitoring.

It walks through setting up telemetry with a partner telemetry connection string in AL-Go settings (not a new feature), downloading and importing the dashboard, and then the dashboard pages: workflow overview, workflow duration, runners, and AL-Go maintenance with deprecation warnings. The presenter says the dashboard is only a starting point that can be customized.

Key points

  • AL-Go can log workflow telemetry to Azure Application Insights by setting a partner telemetry connection string in AL-Go settings (repository or organization level). This is not new in this release.
  • The latest AL-Go for GitHub includes a starter dashboard. Telemetry must be enabled first.
  • To set up the dashboard, download the file from the AL-Go repository (scenario article ‘enabling telemetry’), change the cluster URI and the database (the Application Insights resource name), then import it from file at dataexplorer.azure.com.
  • The overview page shows the number of repositories, workflow run counts and failures over time, with links to the GitHub UI for investigation.
  • The duration page tracks average workflow duration over time per repository to show performance trends.
  • The runner page compares self-hosted and GitHub-hosted runners, with compute hours and Linux versus Windows usage.
  • The maintenance page shows the AL-Go version per repository, alerts when updates are available, and lists update workflow history and deprecation warnings with linked guidance.
