What's New: Value Chain Automation with Production Orders (2025 release wave 1)

Value chain tracking for sustainability in Business Central production orders, in preview in 2025 release wave 1. It covers sustainability value entries, emissions on items, work centers, BOMs, routings and production journals. Only the average costing method and carbon equivalent are supported.

Overview

The video, published 2025-04-01, shows how emissions are collected from purchase documents and carried through production orders. Sustainability value entries work much like costing value entries for items. Emissions come from items and work centers, flow into production BOMs and routings, and are posted through consumption, output and production journals.

It demos setup (enabling value chain tracking, running Calculate CO2E on first setup), item cards, purchase invoice integration, production order refresh and posting, and the resulting sustainability entries. The presenter says the functionality is in public preview, some features are missing (such as item charges), and it should be tested in a sandbox before production use.

Key points

  • Value chain tracking is enabled in sustainability setup. It works only with carbon equivalent: values entered on purchase documents are converted to carbon equivalent in the background.
  • Sustainability value entries support only the average costing method in this wave. Item charges are not supported and there is no printout of final gas emissions.
  • On first setup, run Calculate Carbon Equivalent manually for items, work centers, production BOMs and routings. After that it works automatically.
  • Manual emission entry on item cards is available only when the replenishment policy is purchase. Automatic calculation applies to items whose replenishment system is not purchase.
  • Production orders show total carbon equivalent only after Refresh Production Order is run. Consumption, output and production journals can post emissions.
  • Capacity ledger entry gets a sustainability account column linking to sustainability value entries, which hold the other emission details.
  • The feature is in public preview. Test it in a sandbox before using it in production.

Quotes

  • 0:46 “sustainability value entries this is very similar as we have costing method earlier for items so now we have similar functionality with value entries”
  • 2:47 “it works only with carbon equivalent so whatever you enter your purchase documents system will automatically in a background calculate to carbon equivalent based”
  • 3:46 “calculation will be done only for items where replenishment system is not purchase so if this is a purchase you will get this information”
  • 4:07 “currently we support only average method so stability value entries is very similar with value entry but we are supporting in this wave only”
  • 4:48 “if you want to use them in production uh process you need to enable this enable value chain tracking and once when you enable”
  • 5:08 “value chain completely functionality is in public preview in this moment as I mentioned for example we do not have it charge so some”
  • 5:28 “all documents are related only to sustainability value entry except one first document related with purchase uh docu purchase invoice is related to both”

Disclaimers in the video

  • 1:47 not-in-this-release: in this wave we do not have print out for that but you can find information about final um gas emissions related to items you want to sell
  • 4:07 not-in-this-release: currently we support only average method uh in this moment we will wait your feedback to see what you need so maybe we will extend in future but for now we didn’t plan
  • 5:08 preview: value chain completely functionality is in public preview in this moment as I mentioned for example we do not have it charge so some of features are still missing so our suggestion will be first tested in a send box before you start with production
