What's New: Water and Waste Management (2025 release wave 1)

Business Central 2025 release wave 1 extends sustainability from emissions to water and waste management. It adds a water and waste scope on categories, optional water intensity, discharge into water and waste intensity factors with custom formulas, responsibility centers as facilities with water capacity, required intensity types and water types on journal lines, and water and waste targets and baselines in sustainability goals. Water and waste data can currently be posted only through the sustainability journal.

Overview

The video extends Business Central sustainability beyond emissions to water and waste management. The presenter says this covers requirements such as CSRD. It walks through setup of accounts, categories and subcategories, optional intensity and discharge factors with custom formulas, and a new water and waste scope next to scope one, two and three.

It then shows responsibility centers used as facilities with water capacity fields, extensible enums for intensity types and water types, posting through the sustainability journal, and use of water and waste intensity in sustainability goals with baselines from previous periods.

Key points

  • A new water and waste scope sits alongside scope one, two and three for emissions. Choosing it on the sustainability category is mandatory, along with whether to track water intensity, discharge into water or waste intensity.
  • Water and waste factors and custom formulas are optional. Without factors, you can enter the total intensity in the journal.
  • Responsibility centers can be treated as facilities. This is optional and only needed for reporting against facility capacity. A new sustainability fast tab holds water capacity dimension, capacity unit (a standard unit of measure) and capacity quantity.
  • Water intensity type options are withdrawn, discharge, consume and recycled. Waste options are generated, disposed and recovered. One must be selected, and the enums are extensible.
  • Water type options are surface water, sea water, groundwater, third party water and produced water. A water type must be chosen for water postings.
  • Water and waste data can currently be posted only through the sustainability journal. Unlike emissions, they cannot be posted through the general journal or purchase documents. Posted values land in sustainability ledger entries.
  • Sustainability goals support water and waste intensity as targets and baselines. Targets are free forecast values, and the baseline is based on a previous period.

Quotes

  • 0:29 “But now with this wave we extend the functionality to water and waste management.”
  • 0:42 “We did it before because it was required by CSRD and some other rules. So we want to cover all requirements related to uh”
  • 1:59 “So we extend a little bit responsibility centers as we can treat responsibility centers as facility. This is not mandatory.”
  • 3:23 “You have three different uh scope one, scope two, scope three, autoscope emissions and plus now we have water and waste scope.”
  • 3:47 “So if you do not have factors both for waste and water you can enter your total uh intensity in your journal and that’s”
  • 4:53 “Both of these uh options are enums so you can extend if you have additional option to track okay.”
  • 5:34 “what is mandatory you need to choose uh as a emission scope water and waste”
  • 8:12 “What is difference with emissions? You can track emissions with sustainability journal with general journal from this wave and purchase document but water and”
  • 8:45 “Baseline is uh based on your previous period you want to track.”

Disclaimers in the video

  • 8:58 other: for this wave we have eight different session related to sustainability
