Overview

This section documents upgrades to Business Central 2021 release wave 2 (version 19). The entry page, “Upgrade to Business Central 2021 Wave 2”, describes the two options: a technical upgrade or application refactoring. Pick the path that matches your starting version and how customized your application is. Separate articles cover each starting point. From versions 16, 17 or 18 there is a technical upgrade. A base application upgrade covers versions 15, 16, 17 and 18. From version 14 there are three cases: an unmodified C/AL application (version 14 or earlier), a customized C/AL application moved to the Microsoft base application, and a technical upgrade that converts a version 14 application with C/AL customizations to the version 19 platform using AL base application extensions. Supporting pages cover Txt2Al code conversion, permission sets as AL objects, moving tables and fields between extensions with migration.json, and installing a version 19 cumulative update. Start with the overview page and the compatibility matrix to confirm your path. Then follow the matching upgrade article. Use the migration and permission pages when you have customizations. The India Data Migration Toolkit page applies only to Dynamics NAV 2016 India upgrades.

Key points

  • Two upgrade options to version 19: technical upgrade or application refactoring.
  • Technical upgrade to version 19 applies from versions 16, 17 or 18, and includes database conversion, extension compilation, tenant mounting and synchronization.
  • A base application upgrade page covers versions 15, 16, 17 and 18, including extension publishing, data upgrade and permission sets.
  • Version 14 C/AL applications, modified or unmodified, move to the Microsoft System and Base Application extensions using the DestinationAppsForMigration server setting. Customized applications also use migration.json for a two-phase table migration.
  • The Txt2Al tool converts version 14 C/AL customizations to AL, including .NET interoperability and test library conversion.
  • Tables and fields can move between extensions using migration.json. Moving down the dependency graph is direct. Moving up needs a two-stage process with a transition extension.
  • Permissions change from legacy data-based permissions to AL object-based Permission Set and Permission Set Extension objects.
  • The India Data Migration Toolkit upgrades Dynamics NAV 2016 India data in two steps. It covers localization data but not customizations.
