Overview

This section covers moving an on-premises Business Central deployment to a newer release. Three pages sit at the top level: an overview of upgrading to Business Central (online or on-premises, including help migration and multitenancy migration), a matrix of supported upgrade paths, and a list of known issues for installation, upgrade and operations.

Detailed procedures are split by release. The v26 to v29 subtopics cover upgrade paths, pre-upgrade considerations for v26 and later, the upgrade steps from earlier versions, and installing an update of that version. The v25 subtopic covers upgrade paths, installing a v25 update, report and permission changes, and application and data upgrade steps. Earlier versions (v14 through v24) are grouped in one subtopic. A Related articles subtopic covers Txt2Al conversion of version 14 C/AL code to AL and migrating tables and fields between extensions with migration.json.

Start with the supported upgrade paths page to see whether your source version can reach the target directly or needs intermediate versions. Then open the subtopic for the target release, read any pre-upgrade considerations, and follow the upgrade steps.

Key points

  • The supported paths page shows direct and indirect routes from v14 (Spring 2019) to v29 (2026 wave 2).
  • Direct upgrade from v14 to the latest is not supported from v26 onwards; v14 must route through v25.
  • The v29 guide covers upgrading from versions 25, 26, 27 or 28 and installing a v29 update.
  • The v28 guide covers upgrading from versions 25, 26 or 27 and installing a v28 update.
  • The v27 and v26 guides cover upgrade paths, pre-upgrade considerations, installing updates and upgrading the System and Base Application.
  • The v25 guide covers upgrade paths, installing a v25 update, report and permission changes, and application and data upgrade steps.
  • Known issues cover PowerShell module failures, evaluation company creation, web server installation, extension sync errors and NavUserPassword authentication.
  • Related articles cover Txt2Al conversion of version 14 C/AL code to AL, migration.json table moves between extensions, and the India Data Migration Toolkit.
