Comparing Segment and Dimension Setup between Dynamics GP and Dynamics Business Central (2024)

When you migrate from Dynamics GP to Business Central, GP account segments map to Business Central dimensions. In the cloud migration Setup Wizard you choose which segments become the two Global Dimensions. The remaining segments come over as shortcut dimensions, and segment values become dimension values. The video walks through the GP account format, then General Ledger Setup, Dimensions and the migrated chart of accounts in Business Central.

Overview

The video compares how account segments work in Dynamics GP with how dimensions work in Business Central. It starts with the GP account format and segment setup, then covers what happens to segments when migrating to Business Central.

In the cloud migration Setup Wizard you choose which segments become Global Dimensions. The remaining segments are migrated as shortcut dimensions. The video then checks the result in General Ledger Setup, the dimension pages and the chart of accounts, and confirms the segment values arrived as dimension values.

Key points

  • Business Central has two Global Dimensions. They should be the most common GP segments, because they are easy to sort and filter on.
  • GP segments beyond the two Global Dimensions are migrated as shortcut dimensions.
  • The cloud migration Setup Wizard lets you select which segments become Global Dimensions.
  • GP segment values are migrated over as dimension values. You can create additional values later.
  • After migration, the Global and shortcut dimensions can be checked on the General Ledger Setup page.
  • GP main accounts become the Business Central chart of accounts. Drilling into a balance shows amounts broken out by division and department, similar to GP.
  • The example use case is categorizing revenue by region and market segment, and expenses by department and projects.
